Online Spanish Courses

Our approach is simple. Unless you are a complete beginner, you will complete a level test – and from this we’ll introduce you to a class with others at the same level. If you want private tuition or examination/business help, we’ll use the test to provide bespoke training to meet your precise needs.

In all our group classes and private sessions you’ll be encouraged to speak Spanish with your teacher and the other students, using class materials to gain confidence and with relevant homework which you can work on in your own time to improve your language skills.

Our online classes are simple to take part in: before each class, your teacher will send you a link to open up to a Zoom session, where the class will take place.  Homework is set online, with teachers using various platforms (Google Classrooms, Google Docs, Microsoft Teams, etc.) depending on the class’s preference.

Our classes

Lorca Spanish is conducting all its classes online now and they follow the same format as our normal, face-to-face classes as far as possible. We hope to return to face-to-face classes as soon as we are allowed to – hopefully for the autumn term!

Typically, our classes have between four and 11 students (maximum 16), so everyone gets plenty of the teacher’s time. To give you an idea of what our classes were like before the coronavirus crisis, a class at beginners’ level is shown on this video and a class at a more advanced level is shown here.

All our classes are taught by fully qualified, native Spanish or Latin American tutors. Even at beginner level, classes are conducted in Spanish and students are encouraged to use the language from day one. Research shows that complete immersion in the language leads to more effective and quicker learning. Teachers will occasionally use English for the purposes of clarification (usually in lower level classes).

Times & Terms

Classes run over three terms

  • 11th July to 19th September (11 weeks)  THIS COURSE IS ONLINE
  • Next term begins 3rd October – 12th December  (11 weeks as opposed to our normal 14 week autumn course). We hope we might be able to resume normal classes but if not then we shall continue online.
  • Then, mid January to end March  (11 weeks).

ONLINE Class Times:

  • Saturday mornings: from 10.00am to 12.30pm
  • Weekday classes: Monday through to Thursday evening, from 6.00pm – 8.30pm.
  • One-to-one tuition is generally from 3.00pm – 6.30pm, Monday to Thursday (earliest and latest start times given)

Lorca Spanish will only contact you if a class is cancelled: otherwise you should assume that the class you have enrolled in will go ahead.

Class Format

Due to the coronavirus, we have rescheduled our terms and currently you can join a class four times a year.  We four terms of 11 weeks each, Jul-Oct, Oct-Dec, Jan-Apr and Apr-Jun.  You’ll have one online class per week, lasting 2.5 hours and with a short interval (descanso) for tea/coffee and biscuits and a comfort break!

This takes place on a term-by-term basis. Please note that although it takes more than one term to complete a level (apart from complete beginners – which takes one term) you don’t have to enrol for more than one term at a time.

These were previously available during the months of July and August but have now been rolled into our four term programme for the year.

One-to-one (standard syllabus or tailor made) online courses are ideal for those students who cannot commit to a particular time for a group class or who wish to study on their own. You can follow a standard General Spanish course or have a bespoke course allowing you to focus on a particular topic.  Please contact us for further details: enquiries@lorcaspanish.com

Previously, these classes were arranged on private group basis where people at a similar level studied together in a small class. We are currently reviewing how we might offer these courses and will let you know as soon as possible.  Please contact us for further details: enquiries@lorcaspanish.com

Lorca Spanish offers courses for everyone from complete beginners to advanced students. All students (unless they are complete beginners) take a short test which helps us place them in the most suitable class. Our General Spanish courses then follow a set syllabus which allows you to progress and improve your proficiency with the language.

An integrated, online skills course which places a lot of emphasis on speaking and also takes into account listening, reading and writing. Grammar and vocabulary are introduced in a contextualised form. Pronunciation practice also forms an integral part of any course. All our group courses follow our standard General Spanish syllabus. Courses run throughout the academic year (see “Class formats” for more information on term structure).  Please contact us for further details: enquiries@lorcaspanish.com

This is also taught online in the same way as general Spanish but with a business and commerce orientation and a particular emphasis on business vocabulary.  Currently, this course is only available on a one-to-one basis online.  Please contact us for further details: enquiries@lorcaspanish.com

Our new online approach is similar to General Spanish in that all the major skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing, grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation) are involved but exam technique is of particular importance. While we know that exams have been postponed, this course will help you keep your Spanish up and make it easier to pass when exams resume.

Topics studied will therefore be based on the exam syllabus. We run the following exam preparation courses: The Spanish diploma courses (commonly known as the “D.E.L.E.” courses- see below), Highers and National Five.  PLEASE NOTE: currently all our exam preparation courses are only available on a one-to-one basis. Please contact us for further details:  enquiries@lorcaspanish.com

The “Diploma de Español como Lengua Extranjera” or “DELE”; exams are internationally recognised diploma qualifications at three levels: beginner/elementary, intermediate and advanced. All three exams include reading comprehension, writing, listening comprehension and speaking components.  This course is currently only available on a one-to-one basis online.  Please contact us for further details: enquiries@lorcaspanish.com

If you have any other requirement, such as Legal Spanish or vocabulary for a specific topic, please tell us and we will do our best to help you. Please contact us at: enquiries@lorcaspanish.com

Find Your Level

Lorca Spanish offers courses for everyone from complete beginners to advanced students. All students (unless they are complete beginners) take a short test which helps us place them in the most suitable class. Our General Spanish courses then follow a set syllabus which allows you to progress and improve your proficiency with the language.

No previous knowledge of Spanish is assumed and the course starts with very basic phrases and phrases as well pronunciation practice.  Students will develop fundamental skills, enabling them to communicate at a basic level. Number of terms normally required to complete this level: 1

This is a course for those with previous but limited knowledge of Spanish. It begins with revision of the basics – e.g. giving personal information and re-visits the use of the present tense before progressing to look at new grammatical structures and vocabulary. Students should be able to express basic personal information related to daily life and have a basic knowledge of Spanish language structure and vocabulary. Number of terms normally required to complete this level: 2

This level extends the grammar and vocabulary learned in level 1. Students should be able to express, orally and in writing, opinions, feelings and needs related to daily life. They should be familiar with regular and irregular present tense verbs, some past tenses (pretérito perfecto), future (“ir a” + infinitive verb), the present continuous and pronouns (direct and indirect objects).  Number of terms normally required to complete this level: 3

This course introduces more complex levels of conversation. There is greater emphasis on vocabulary and a strong focus on accuracy in terms of speaking and writing skills. In addition to the tenses looked at in level 2, students also learn the uses of the imperative as well as the future and past perfect tenses. The subjunctive is also introduced at this stage.  Number of terms normally required to complete this level: 3

At this level one of the main objectives is better accuracy in speaking and writing. Students have sufficient knowledge of the verb tenses to be able to use present, past and future comfortably. The subjunctive is practised further. More free-form conversational work takes place at this level and students will participate in presentations and class debates.  Number of terms normally required to complete this level: 3

All main verb tenses and important grammar structures will have been covered by the time students reach this level and this course is about maintaining a high level of Spanish. Typically, this involves class debates and discussions on varied topics from current affairs, films and general culture. Students will be expected actively to participate in discussions to expand their linguistic and cultural knowledge as well as being able to select the appropriate vocabulary and register for different
situations.  Number of terms normally required to complete this level: 6

The Level 5 course is designed to maintain and perfect an already high level of Spanish. Students will be able to change their style of speaking easily and will be quite happy with changes of speed and intonation as well as being familiar with more specific communicative functions of the language. The students will also be able to recognise different Spanish and Latin American dialects. The course consists of debate and discussions on varied topics from current affairs, films and general
culture. Number of terms normally required to complete this level: at this level the emphasis is on maintaining and perfecting your language skills therefore enrolment could be for a minimum of one term or on an ongoing basis.
